Finding your LPAR/s what HMC and Managed Systems it is running on

It help a lot for system administrators to run a script in order to find the LPAR is in.  And I used this whenever someone asks me to find them, so it's really quite handy.

hscroot@phmc01:~> for sys in $(lssyscfg -r sys -F "name"); do echo -e "$sys\n---"; lssyscfg -m $sys -r lpar -F "name,state"; echo; done

Thanks to my senior colleague, as this is very useful especially if the storage gone through migration.  This extra parameter seems not existing in the -help though.

Extend /tmp on Solaris

Need to add +2G to my /tmp in order to do Netbackup upgrade (v. 7.7.3).  Well in this case, I am getting some failure in upgrading so I decided to install it using "install_client_files sftp $CLIENT mmond"

mmond@sehp01:~$ df -h /tmp
Filesystem             Size   Used  Available Capacity  Mounted on
swap                   374M   280M        94M    75%    /tmp
mmond@sehp01:~$ sudo zfs list rpool
NAME    USED  AVAIL  REFER  MOUNTPOINT
rpool  45.0G  3.94G  76.5K  /rpool
mmond@sehp01:~$ sudo zfs create -p -V 2G rpool/swapextra
mmond@sehp01:~$ sudo swap -a /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swapextra
mmond@sehp01:~$ sudo swap -lh
swapfile                      dev            swaplo      blocks        free
/dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap      301,1              8K         10G        3.2G
/dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swapextra 301,10             8K        2.0G        2.0G

After the upgrade I just removed it file used to extend my /tmp.

mmond@sehp01:~$ sudo swap -d /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swapextra
mmond@sehp01:~$ sudo zfs destroy rpool/swapextra

The agent installer detected an existing device record 'Server ID 188440001 (skttp1ftp01.int.skat.dk)' in the core that has the same chassis ID

For the past few days, I struggled with a problem on deploying 5 servers via HP Server Automation (HPSA) tool.

Checked the following together with our data center guy:

  1. VLAN has properly been identified and configured.
  2. Can ping both directions (servers and jumphosts) and can access/download updates from Red Hat, so I know the VLAN is indeed working as expected.

Then I found out some errors by looking at the logs (/var/log/opsware/agent/*)

[10/Jan/2010 00:49:29 +0200] INFO "SSLError: ('error:14090086:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate verify failed', 336134278, 'Hint: 1. User is not root, permission denied to open port.', 'Hint: 2. System time far away in the future or past might be the root cause of this error.')

I just noticed that the date is quite old and when I check, the server I am deploying don't have the correct system date/time.  So I just did a

# systemctl stop ntpd
# ntpdate time.csn.local
# systemctl start ntpd

And another one (on other server after even after correcting the system date/time).

# tailf agent.err
  method:  updateDevice
  module:  spinmethods.py
  params:  {'msg': "The agent installer detected an existing device record 'Server ID 188440001 (sktp1fftp0ma02.ccta.dk)' in the core that has the same chassis ID; the installer attempted to reclaim this device record but failed to because the device record is not configured to accept a request to issue a certificate.\n\nTo solve this problem, please refer to knowledge base article: http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/document/KM546387\n"}
  request:  UNKNOWN
  tb_chain:  [[{'function': '_call', 'line': 178, 'file': './shadrpc.py'}, {'function': 'call', 'line': 74, 'file': './spinrpc.py'}, {'function': '__call__', 'line': 384, 'file': './spinmethods.py'}, {'function': 'handle', 'line': 720, 'file': './spinmethods.py'}, {'function': 'inner', 'line': 7210, 'file': './spinmethods.py'}, {'function': 'updateDevice', 'line': 9753, 'file': './spinmethods.py'}, {'function': 'updateDevice', 'line': 7522, 'file': './spinmethods.py'}]]
  timestamp:  26/May/2018 200334
  timeticks:  None

So I needed to:
  1. Deactivate and unregister the SA Agent in HPSA
  2. Uninstall the agent on the server
  3. And re-register it using "--force_new_device"
# /opt/opsware/agent/bin/agent_uninstall.sh
./opsware-agent-60.0.62732.1-linux-7SERVER-X86_64 --opsw_gw_addr 152.103.214.100:3001 --force_new_device

Using Jumpcloud's LDAP-as-a-Service + Multi-Factor Authentication for SSH Login in Linux

I am doing a Proof-of-Concept for my personal project using Jumpcloud's LDAP-as-a-Service.  Hence it's free for 10 users.  In the long run, I plan to setup my home lab and create my virtual office in there.

  1. Spin a Linux virtual machine in Linode.
  2. Create an account in Jumpcloud.
  3. Enabled Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in emporium Linux system via Jumpcloud's portal.  In this case, I used Google Authenticator tool (that's why it asks for Verification code below upon login).
Here's the sample output of the setup I have done.  I will try to make it more detailed soon.

[mmond@nx ~]$ ssh michaelm@112.10.223.211
Verification code:
Password:
Last login: Thu Mar  1 08:30:24 2018

[michaelm@europium ~]$
[michaelm@europium ~]$ sudo su -
We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:
    #1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
    #3) With great power comes great responsibility.
[sudo] password for michaelm:

resize2fs: Operation not permitted While trying to add group

Recently, I encountered this problem when resizing an EXT4 file system in our NFS server.

# df -hT /export/rear
Filesystem           Type  Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear
                     ext4  1.2T  1.2T   16M 100% /export/rear
# resize2fs /dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear
resize2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Filesystem at /dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear is mounted on /export/rear; on-line resizing required
old desc_blocks = 74, new_desc_blocks = 108
Performing an on-line resize of /dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear to 450920448 (4k) blocks.
resize2fs: Operation not permitted While trying to add group #9472

# dmesg
EXT4-fs warning (device dm-28): ext4_group_add: No reserved GDT blocks, can't resize
EXT4-fs warning (device dm-28): ext4_group_add: No reserved GDT blocks, can't resize

I followed this Redhat KB Article - https://access.redhat.com/solutions/88483

# tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear
tune2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
The has_journal feature may only be cleared when the filesystem is
unmounted or mounted read-only.

# dumpe2fs /dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear | grep -i features
dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Filesystem features:      has_journal ext_attr resize_inode dir_index filetype needs_recovery extent flex_bg sparse_super large_file huge_file uninit_bg dir_nlink extra_isize
Journal features:         journal_incompat_revoke

So solution would be either:

  • Go and install XFS (need additional subscription as the system is RHEL 6.8)
  • Or recreate the file system but with additional parameters --resize=max-online-resize

Full explanation has been posted here as well.

Thus, it has been decided by our Platform Architect that it's okay to move to XFS instead.  So I needed to enable a subscription and went ahead installing XFS.

$ sudo subscription-manager repos --list | grep scalefs
$ sudo subscription-manager repos --enable=rhel-6.4-scalefs-server-for-rhs-2.1-rpms

Here's what I did.

$ sudo yum install xfsprogs xfsdump -y

I made a request of 2x1TB LUNs from our Storage Team and created a new volume group called vgrear.

$ sudo pvcreate /dev/mapper/3600601604bc03800c862f9bc0bdce711
$ sudo pvcreate /dev/mapper/3600601604bc03800c662f9bc0bdce711
$ sudo vgcreate vgrear /dev/mapper/3600601604bc03800c862f9bc0bdce711 /dev/mapper/3600601604bc03800c662f9bc0bdce711

Created the logical volume group and the new file system (/export/rear_new).

$ sudo mkfs.xfs /dev/vgrear/lvrear
meta-data=/dev/vgrear/lvrear     isize=256    agcount=4, agsize=134217216 blks
         =                       sectsz=512   attr=2, projid32bit=0
data     =                       bsize=4096   blocks=536868864, imaxpct=5
         =                       sunit=0      swidth=0 blks
naming   =version 2              bsize=4096   ascii-ci=0
log      =internal log           bsize=4096   blocks=262143, version=2
         =                       sectsz=512   sunit=0 blks, lazy-count=1
realtime =none                   extsz=4096   blocks=0, rtextents=0

$ sudo mkdir /export/rear_new
$ sudo mount /dev/vgrear/lvrear /export/rear_new
$ df -hT /export/rear_new
Filesystem           Type  Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vgrear-lvrear
                     xfs   2.0T   33M  2.0T   1% /export/rear_new

Afterwards, I did an rsync (copy/transfer of files) from /export/rear to /export/rear_new.  And did the un/export, un/re-mounting of the file systems (did an lsof to ensure nothing is using the files/folders).  I also modified the /etc/fstab to reflect the changes I made in the VG/LV.

$ sudo rsync -avP /export/rear/* /export/rear_new/
sending incremental file list
a.out
...
$ sudo lsof /export/rear_new/
$ sudo lsof /export/rear
$ sudo exportfs -u *:/export/rear
$ sudo umount /export/rear; sudo umount /export/rear_new
$ sudo vi /etc/fstab
$ cat /etc/fstab | grep rear
/dev/vgadm/lvrear               /export/rear_old        ext4    ro,data=ordered         0 0
/dev/vgrear/lvrear              /export/rear            xfs     defaults,nodev  0 0
$ sudo mv /export/rear /export/rear_old
$ sudo mv /export/rear_new /export/rear
$ ls -l /export/ | grep rear
drwxrwxrwx 220 root   root    8192 Dec 13 18:56 rear
drwxrwxrwx 221 root   root   12288 Dec 13 06:23 rear_old
$ sudo mount /dev/vgrear/lvrear /export/rear
$ sudo mount /dev/vgadm/lvrear /export/rear_old
$ df -hT | grep rear
/dev/mapper/vgrear-lvrear
                     xfs    2.0T 1021G  1.1T  50% /export/rear
/dev/mapper/vgadm-lvrear
                     ext4   1.2T  1.0T  143G  88% /export/rear_old

And tested the archived file system /export/rear_old, and now it is read-only mode.

$ sudo touch /export/rear_old/test.ro
touch: cannot touch `/export/rear_old/test.ro': Read-only file system

AIX: How to UNZIP files

Today, I tried unzipping but it seems the tool isn't installed or possibly not included.  So this JAR utility seems to have the capability to extract/decompress .zip files.

HP-UX 11.3: Trusted System - Root password change

How to change an root user of HP-UX when it is a trusted system.

[chronos:root]/root # passwd
Changing password for root
Old password:
Sorry.
[chronos:root]/root # cd /tcb/files/auth/r
[chronos:root]/tcb/files/auth/r # ls -l
total 112
-rw-rw-r--   1 root       root           137 Aug 11  2010 regj
-rw-rw-r--   1 root       root           305 Nov 13 14:59 root

Of course we need to make a backup just in case.

[chronos:root]/tcb/files/auth/r # cp -p root root.old
[chronos:root]/tcb/files/auth/r # vi root
[chronos:root]/tcb/files/auth/r # diff root root.old
2c2
<       :u_pwd=:\
---
>       :u_pwd=FDKPruSmIH4vs:\

The password can now be changed.  And it won't ask for the old password.
